Highlights from an Evening of Inspiration and Progress

The Woodland Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the City of Woodland, was thrilled to host another inspiring and successful State of the City Dinner, bringing together community leaders, businesses, and residents for an evening of reflection, celebration, and forward-looking vision. Held on Thursday, June 26th at the Woodland Community College's beautiful new Performing Arts & Culinary Center, the event truly showcased the vibrant spirit and collaborative strength of our beloved city.

Mayor Rich Lansburgh delivered an insightful address, highlighting key achievements and outlining exciting plans for Woodland's future. The atmosphere was electric, filled with optimism and a shared commitment to our community's growth and prosperity.

We were especially moved by the powerful video poem Dear Woodland , written by Chris Worden and performed by Tomás Montoya, which beautifully captured the essence and heart of our city and was premiered as part of the Mayor's remarks. The Numbers are in on the 57th Annual Holiday Parade!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the Holiday Season with us!

We recently met with our friends over at Placer.ai to go over foot traffic for the 57th Annual Holiday Parade, and we are pleased to announce some of our key takeaways!

Total Attendance: 16,500

We had over 16 thousand attendees this year! We are incredibly proud of this success, having that many people out on Main Street in spite of the uncooperative weather reminds us why we host the parade in the first place. This is, by far, the most-attended event of the year in Downtown Woodland and we are immeasurably grateful to everyone who attended.

Primary Draw by City: Woodland, Davis, Sacramento, Vacaville

Attendees to the parade primarily come from our neighboring cities. 70% of attendees came from within two zip codes, but the remarkable statistic was that 18% of attendees came from between 18 and 30 miles away ! This bracket was the highest after our nearest neighbors, and we drew more guests from farther away than previous years.

This increased foot traffic downtown translates into increased visits to businesses, and we hope that all of our members and businesses downtown enjoyed having all these new guests to our city.

We also want to congratulate the parade winners once again! We had some amazing entries, and you can check out the winners by category below.

Prop. 36 will be on the November ballot and may have large impact on your business. The proposition seeks to amend Prop. 47, a contentious retail theft measure passed in 2014. [Woodland, CA] – The Woodland Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Bullseye Farms as the recipient of the 2024 Agribusiness of the Year Award. This prestigious award recognizes an outstanding agricultural business that demonstrates excellence in leadership, innovation, and community involvement.

Bullseye Farms, owned by the Beeman family, is a true gem of Woodland’s agricultural community. With a deep-rooted history dating back to 1852, the Beemans have been an integral part of the fabric of Woodland since its early days as a pioneer settlement.

Bullseye Farms has established itself as an industry leader in regenerative agriculture and sustainable farming practices. Their commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in their regular collaborations with organizations such as the Yolo Land Trust, the Community Alliance for Family Farmers, the California Climate and Agricultural Network, the Center for Land-based Learning, and UC Davis.

Beyond their agricultural accomplishments, Bullseye Farms is deeply committed to giving back to the Woodland community. They are a regular supporter of the Yolo Food Bank, ensuring that those in need have access to nutritious food. The Chamber recently polled our membership on Measure U, a one percent sales tax measure on the upcoming 2024 ballot (you can read up on the measure on Yolo County's website ).

We've posted the results of the survey to the Chamber Surveys page on our website. The Chamber did not receive enough survey responses to take an official position on Measure U. Thank you to everyone who filled out our survey, your feedback helps us better represent you as your Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber has launched a new survey page on its website and will post future results.

Thank You for a Truly Incredible Parade!

This past Saturday, the Chamber of Commerce's Home for the Holiday Magic parade rode down Main Street for the first time in too many years. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to all the participants, sponsors, volunteers, and attendees who made this parade the truly wonderful experience that it was.

The holiday parade is made possible by Chamber staff, a committee comprised of members of our Board and the community at large, our sponsors, and over 80 volunteers from across service organizations, police and sheriff volunteers, high school service clubs, and local HAM radio operators. We host this parade to bring the community together to celebrate the culture, history, traditions, and diversity of Woodland, and with almost 20,000 people turning out to see the parade we are proud to say that this was one of best parades ever. The Specific Plan for the project passed Woodland City Council's first hearing on September 5th and now enters the appeal phase ahead of the second hearing on September 19th. The Chamber of Commerce believes that this development will be critical to the economic health of our community and has endorsed this project (which you can read here ). In case you missed it, here are some key takeaways:

If people are on your (private) property and you don't want them there, inform them they are trespassing and call either your property manager or the police.
If your property management consistently turns a blind eye to trespassers, contact Code Enforcement with the City of Woodland and they can issue citations.
A healthy and proactive relationship with your property management is absolutely critical as they are responsible for the maintenance of the property.
Woodland PD has crime prevention programs that can help you keep your business safe and healthy.
Contact Woodland PD for advice on crime prevention tools, such as night-time floodlights or noise machines that can prevent people from loitering around your property at night.
Yolo County Environmental Health is doing everything in their power to keep the consumers of Yolo County as healthy and as safe as possible. However, the complexity of the issues they address and the general dearth of resources and staff mean that progress can feel very slow, patience is key, and ultimately there are no easy solutions.
Under new state laws, Yolo County is developing a pathway for unpermitted food vendors to gain their permits and licenses. Rather than focus on punishing people for doing the wrong thing, they want to help people do the right thing.

We just wrapped up our July Membership Meeting with an update on water resources in and around Woodland. Thank you Kristen Sicke and Tim Busch for your excellent presentations!

Among many other important updates, our favorite was learning how great our water is in Woodland (time to bypass your household water softeners, you don't need them anymore). If you were unable to attend, we have you covered! We recorded the meeting so that none of our members would miss out.

The Annual Installation and Member Recognition Dinner was a huge success!

Last Friday, the Woodland Chamber of Commerce celebrated our 91 ^st Annual Installation and Member Recognition Dinner at the Silos at Velocity Island Resort. We could not be happier with the turnout, and we hope everyone had as much fun as we did.

We recognized our outgoing President Mark Ullrich for his outstanding service to our organization. Serving two consecutive terms as our President, Mark has been invaluable to our mission, and we are fortunate to still have him as an active member of the Chamber and our Board of Directors. Mark has passed the gavel to Kayla Rodriguez from Waste Management who will serve as our President for 2023, and we are excited to see where her leadership takes us.

We wished a fond farewell to retiring Board members Denise Costa and Kelley Jacobsen. Their service to the Chamber has been extraordinary and we look forward to working with them in the future.

We were also joined by local dignitaries Jesse Salinas, the Yolo County Assessor/Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters, Superintendent Garth Lewis from the Yolo County Office of Education, Woodland City Council Members Mayra Vega, Tania Garcia-Cadena, and Tom Stallard, Woodland City Manager Ken Hiatt, Winters City Council Member Jesse Loren, and Moises Diaz from Congressman Mike Thompson’s office. Thank you to everyone who came to the dinner, to Charles Vincent McDonald Photography for providing his amazing photography skills, and to the Silos at Velocity Island Resort for hosting us and catering the event. The venue was beautiful, the food was excellent, and we are incredibly grateful to Velocity Island for all the work that they put into making the dinner a success.

Rachel will also assume the Presidency for the Chamber in 2024, expanding on her role and commitment to our organization and the larger business community. The second Member of the Year Award went to Vinod Patel with Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites and the Holiday Inn Express for his generous support. Whether its event space, items for raffles and auctions, or financial contributions, Vinod is an amazing supporter of the Chamber and the Woodland community.

The HIVE Tasting Room and Kitchen earned our Small Business of the Year Award. A family-owned business, Nectar Director Josh Zeldner and his mother, the Queen Bee Amina Harris, invested in a new facility that provides the Woodland community with a much-needed outdoor venue space and tasting room. They also worked with local contractors and committed to a net-zero emissions facility while planting 2 acres of native pollinator habitat, which shows their commitment to investing in the Woodland community. Finally, our Business of the Year Award went to Van Beurden Insurance Services . They have been a leading partner for well over a decade, contributing annually to nearly all our fundraising and networking events, attending socials, leadership meetings, forums, and virtual programs, all to remain a local business that supports its community. Aniek Pflager, Vice President of Van Beurden Insurance Services, has contributed to the Chamber by serving on our Board of Directors and as President in 2020, prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic, serving two full terms for a total of 6 years of service.

Changes are Coming: Bike-Friendly Improvements in Woodland

Rational Unicorn Legal Services Presents The More You Glow Seminar Series

The first two seminars of The More You Glow series this year will cover a variety of topics to help your small business. Both will be held on Zoom and use a "pay what you can" community pricing model ($5, $10, or $20) so that they are accessible to everyone. The Small Business Association is Assisting with Disaster Relief Loans

Low-interest federal disaster loans are now available to California businesses and residents as a result of President Biden’s major disaster declaration, U.S. Small Business Administration’s Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman announced.

If your home or business has been damaged or destroyed by federally declared disaster, you may be eligible for an SBA disaster assistance loan. These long-term, low-interest loans are available to businesses of all sizes, private non-profit organizations, homeowners, and renters to repair or replace uninsured/underinsured disaster damaged property. Economic injury assistance is available to businesses regardless of any property damage.

We are excited to announce that, in partnership with the City of Woodland, we will be hosting a new holiday event on Friday, December 16 ^th from 5 to 8 PM! We were so disappointed to have had to cancel the parade last week, so instead of a moving parade we will have a stationary display where entrants can show off their illuminated floats or vehicles, pass out candy or other treats, and bring the community together for the holiday season. Santa himself is expected to make an appearance!

The 56th Annual Holiday Parade has been cancelled due to weather

It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the cancellation of the 56 ^th Annual Holiday Parade that was scheduled for December 10, 2022 at 4pm due to the forecast of severe weather this weekend. This was an incredibly difficult decision for us to make considering all the time, effort, and resources that to into planning the Holiday Parade. The weather poses too great a risk to the participants and spectators, and the hundreds of workers and volunteers that would need to operate in these conditions.

Everyone that we have spoken to over this week has been exceptionally patient and understanding. Words cannot express our gratitude to everyone who has worked so hard on this year’s parade. The Annual Holiday Parade returns this year on Saturday, December 10th! The first floats will start at 4:00 PM, get there early to find a good spot to watch the parade.

Be advised that Main Street will be closed starting at noon on Saturday, so be sure not to park any vehicles on Main.

Yolo Food Bank launches a new fundraising campaign to support vulnerable populations this holiday season:

The Yolo Food Bank has launched its annual Yolo Give & Gathers fundraising campaign to address food insecurity during the holiday season.

The Yolo Food Bank directly serves more than 12,500 households monthly and thousands more through its 64 nonprofit members. During a time of continued high inflation and economic uncertainty, the amount of people need food assistance has been on a steady increase since the beginning of the year. As a result, Yolo Food Bank has been having to make its food stretch farther, scaling back the amount of food per household in an effort to feed more people.

After a 2-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, the parade will once again ride down Main Street on December 10 ^th this year, with the theme "Home for the Holiday Magic." We want to thank everyone in our community for their patience as well as the City of Woodland for sponsoring this event.

We are also introducing a key change in order to better accommodate our local businesses and the community in general. Instead of a morning start to the parade, we will begin in the afternoon this year with the goal of having the best of both a daytime and nighttime parade. We hope that this change will enhance the overall experience for both the community and the businesses along the parade route, creating new opportunities for our local businesses and opening the possibility of pre- and post-parade festivities as we move forward.

Since this change is new to everyone, we will be adjusting the start time based on the number of participants. Earlier participants will kick off the parade in daylight as we have done in years past, while later divisions will close the parade into the early evening with brightly lit floats and other entries. Entrants will be able to select their desired placement as part of the application process and we will adjust the start time accordingly. We will begin accepting applications on October 5 ^th , and we will also be introducing an online application, which can be found here .

We will be reviewing the overall experience following this year's parade to determine the effects of these changes and to help us chart a path forward for 2023. Again, we truly appreciate everyone's patience over these last few years, and we could not be happier to once again be hosting the Holiday Parade!
